Jon is spot on there. It is for this reason that I have 2 APs on my network - one is a "g" WAP for running Shells and my laptops and one is a "b" WAP so I can use/sync my Jornada 720.

I feel it is only right that you let punters know that a wireless lans speed defaults to that of the lowest spec'ed device on the network... so if you're running a G network and someone attaches a B device, the network will become a B not a G you see?
