Er, Gaffer Tape will keep him quiet for a while... that and a Dinosaur excavation kit from boots for about �7... kept my one busy for a whole day :)

How about one of those Thomas Aquadraw things? You draw tracks with water (so no mess) and then the Thomas train follows the tracks you've just drawn.
No idea how it works (apart from two batteries) but it could be magic!
